The National Education Goals panel held its sixth of eight regional forums on education in Annapolis, MD. The panel was formed by the National Governors Association to monitor the U.S. educational system’s advances toward fulfilling the six educational goals set forth by the National Governors Association. The six goals are: readiness for school, completion, student achievement and citizenship, math and science education, literacy and adult learning, and safe drug-free schools. The committee sought input on optimal methods for achieving the six goals from education and business officials. Mr. Forgione said the panel’s short term goal was to produce a report setting forth each state’s status on education which may be used as a means to measure progress. The long term goal of the panel was to produce a strategy for national education improvement to restore American predominance in education and international competitiveness. close
