Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz talked about her book Blood on the Border: A Memoir of the Contra War, published by South End Press. In this, the third volume of her memoirs, the author recounts the Contra War in Nicaragua. She spent months at a time in Central America throughout the 1980s and witnessed the effect in several regions of civilian casualties due to CIA-trained contra soldiers. Ms. Dunbar-Ortiz argued that the war on terrorism began long before the September 11, 2001 attacks and compares the foreign policy of Ronald Reagan to the present administration. Professor Dunbar-Ortiz read passages from her memoirs, talked about the history of the region, and answered questions from members of the audience.

Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, historian and activist, has written on Native American history in the U.S. and Nicaragua. Her talk, “Sandinistas, Miskito Indians, and the Contra War: A Case Study in the History of Nationalism, Indigeneism, and U.S. Imperialism in Latin America” was sponsored close
