Democratic members of the House Commerce Committee heard testimony from administration officials and others concerning the details and implications of the Republican proposal to save $270 million in the Medicare program over the next seven years as part of balancing the budget. The witnesses not only criticized these savings as too extreme, but they also criticized the plan for reducing funds for enforcing laws against Medicare fraud. Secretariy Shalala was a member of the Medicare trust fund’s board of trustees which released a report outlining what is needed to ensure the solvency of the fund. The Republicans cite this report constantly as the reason for their action. close
