In the second set of hearings by the bipartisan commission, health economists said that Medicare is not as good as most private health insurance because it does not cover some items such as prescription drugs. A panel representing retirees and “baby boomers” disagreed over whether Medicare should limit the amount of money spent on each retiree’s health care. The commission must recommend to President Clinton and Congress, by May, a way to keep the Medicare system from collapsing when “baby boomers” reach retirement age. close
