The Asian American Journalists Association held a town hall meeting at their 2005 17th Annual National Convention entitled “Presumed Guilty?” The panel, coordinated by author Helen Zia and consisting of community members and leaders as well as journalists, examined the relationship between Asian Americans, justice, and the media. Ms. Basu, who moderated the event, introduced the panelists and they responded to questions about stories that made national headlines. Stories such as a Hmong man who killed hunters in Wisconsin and a Muslim Army chaplain arrested and charged with espionage were discussed. Also discussed were such topics as the difficulty of Asian Americans in obtaining justice, the effect on Asian Americans the Patriot Act and the efforts to combat terrorism have had, and how the news media needs to ensure fair and balanced coverage of such events. The panelists also responded to questions from members of the audience. close
