President Obama awarded the Medal of Honor to former Army Staff Sergeant Clinton Romesha. Sergeant Romesha was honored for his actions during an October 3, 2009, battle with the Taliban in eastern Afghanistan, during which eight American soldiers were killed and 24 others were wounded.

In remarks President Obama said U.S. troops should never again be asked to “defend the indefensible,” a reference to Sergeant Romesha’s outpost, which was positioned at the bottom of a valley, making it vulnerable to attack. close
