President Bush presented the nation’s highest civilian award, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, to honor 14 individuals for an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, to world peace, or to cultural or other significant public or private endeavors.

The recipients were Muhammad Ali, Carol Burnett, Aretha Franklin, Alan Greenspan, Vincent Cerf and Robert Kahn for designing the language that led to the internet, golfer Jack Nicklaus, Andy Griffith, Paul Rusesabagina for sheltering hundreds during the Rwandan genocide, Paul Harvey, former Rep. Sonny Montgomery (D-MS), Soviet historian Robert Conquest, retired Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Richard Myers, and Hall of Fame baseball player Frank Robinson. close
