President Clinton presented the Medal of Freedom to this years' five
recipients. The recipients were seated on either side of the
president as he described their historical accomplishments as
defenders of freedom. At the conclusion of the ceremony, President
Clinton personally placed the Medal of Freedom on each of the
recipients.

The Medal of Freedom is the highest presidential honor given to
U.S. civilians.
