Professor James McPherson talked about his life and his writings. He has taught history at Princeton since 1962, and his specialty is the American Civil War and Reconstruction. He is the author of more than a dozen books, including the best-selling book Battle Cry of Freedom: The Civil War Era(1988), which won the Pulitzer Prize for History in 1989. Many Civil War scholars regard this as the preeminent single-volume history of the war. Other books include: The Struggle for Equality: Abolitionists and the Negro in the Civil War and Reconstruction(1964); Abraham Lincoln and the Second American Revolution(1991); For Cause and Comrades: Why Men Fought in the Civil War (1997). He responded to audience telephone calls and electronic mail. close
