Co-authors Jean Sasson and Mayada Al-Askari talked about their book, Mayada, Daughter of Iraq: One Woman’s Survival Under Saddam Hussein, published by Dutton Books. Ms. Al-Askari, a member of a prominent Iraqi family, was assigned as a minder and translator to Ms. Sasson during her visit to Saddam Hussein’s Iraq. Ms. Al-Askari was later arrested, and observed the torture of her cellmates by the Iraqi secret police. After her release from prison, she escaped with her children to Jordan. The book tells her story. Following prepared remarks, the women responded to questions from the audience. close
