David Margolick talked about his book Beyond Glory: Joe Louis vs. Max Schmeling, and a World on the Brink, published by Alfred A. Knopf. In the book, the author recounted the intense heavyweight fights between Joe Louis and Max Schmeling in New York in 1936 and 1938. He discussed the impact the fight had on issues such as racism and international relations. Mr. Margolick also explored Schmeling’s relations with Weimar Germany and the complications that stemmed from that relationship. Mr. Margolick examined society’s response to the fighters in the white South, in the black and Jewish communities throughout the United States, and amongst the general populous in Germany. Following his presentation, the author responded to questions and comments from members of the audience. close
