After an introduction by Leonard Downie, Robert Caro talked about his book, Master of the Senate, published by Knopf. In this book, the third volume of his multi-volume biography, The Years of Lyndon Johnson, Mr. Caro covered events and activities during Johnson’s 12 years in the Senate, from 1949 and 1960. Johnson was Senate minority leader from 1953 to 1955 and majority leader from 1955 to 1961. Mr. Caro analyzed Johnson’s marshaling and manipulation of political power and his accomplishments as a senator, including the passage of civil rights legislation. James Billington then gave a short speech thanking the authors and ending the National Book Festival. After his presentation, Mr. Caro responded to viewer telephone calls. close
