Rep. Ben Cardin and former Rep. Kweisi Mfume debated for the Democratic nomination for the Maryland Senate seat being vacated by retiring Democratic Senator Paul Sarbanes. Topics included education, universal health care, criticisms of the Bush administration and Congress, the war in Iraq, and racism.

The debate, sponsored by the Maryland League of Women Voters, was held in the studio of Maryland Public Television and carried live. There was no studio audience. The moderator was Jeff Salkin, MPT.
