Mr. Coyne talked about his book Marching Home: To War and Back with the Men of One American Town, published by Penguin USA. The book chronicles the stories of six young men who left Freehold to serve in various branches of the armed forces during World War II. Upon their return, the young men were confronted with the realities of postwar life as their community experienced the many changes taking place all over America. In the book, Mr. Coyne presents his hometown of Freehold, N.J. and the lives of the six servicemen as representative of twentieth-century American history, including the decline of manufacturing and farming, the struggle over civil rights, and the growth of the middle class and of the suburbs. Most of the retired servicemen were present at the event and participated during the question and answer period.
