Alva Vanderbilt was the force behind the French inspired palace called “The Marble House.” The Gilded Age relic is preserved in the Rhode Island seaside town of Newport -- the storied 19th century resort of industrialists, financiers, statesmen and artists. The Vanderbilt family fortune came from steamships and the New York Central Railroad. American History TV toured the mansion that the Vanderbilts called their summer cottage. close
