It is made possible by a gift from Second Lady Lynne Cheney, who has donated a portion of the proceeds from her book America: A Patriotic Primer, to underwrite the $10,000 award. The award is named after James Madison, the fourth president of the United States, who loved books from the time he was a child and who changed history with the knowledge he gained from reading. Mrs. Cheney talked about the books that received silver awards as well as the book that received the first gold award to a group of elementary school students from the YMCA of Metropolitan Washington.
