Susan Swain led a panel discussion on how the first ladies of the United States have tried to balance their families' private lives with public expectations of the first family. Topics included changing social expectations, public fascination, personal ambitions, and partnerships with their presidential spouses. Videos and images of first ladies were shown. Panelists included National First Ladies Library historian Carl Sferrazza Anthony, Howard University’s Edna Greene Medford, and journalists Krissah Thompson and Carl Cannon. Ms. Swain is the author of the C-SPAN book First Ladies: Presidential Historians on the Lives of 45 Iconic American Women. “First Ladies: Private Lives, Public Image” was held in the William G. McGowan Theater of the National Archives. close
