President Landsbergis insisted that the Lithuanian people require aid from free countries as his nation is threatened with economic and political catastrophe. The purpose of his visit was to ask for political protection from the Kremlin. He stated that President George H. W. Bush clearly wanted to help the Republic, and ideally wanted the United States to make clear statements expressing disapproval for the Soviets' failure to acknowledge the sovereignty of Lithuania. close
