Richard Hunt, From the Center of Legislative Archives, talked about a confidential letter dated January 18, 1803 from Thomas Jefferson to members of the House and Senate requesting $2,500 for an exploratory mission west of the Mississippi. The mission was later known as the Corps of Discovery, or the Lewis and Clark expedition. The original document that was shown is held at the National Archives and was being displayed as part of the bicentennial commemoration of the expedition. close
