For his history project in sixth grade, Mr. Scott researched the story behind the sinking of the USS Indianapolis during the final days of World War II. Mr. Scott carried his project further when he brought his research to Capitol Hill. Eventually, legislation passed that would clear Captain McVay’s name. His findings served as the inspiration for Mr. Pete Nelson’s book Left For Dead: A Young Man’s Search for Justice for the USS Indianapolis, published by Random House Children’s Books. Hunter Scott talked about his experiences and answered questions from members of the audience, which included four of the surviving crew members of the USS Indianapolis. close
