Authors talked about their books about black leaders. After each author introduced made introductory remarks, Eric Arnesen asked questions before taking questions from members of the audience.

Margaret Washington is the author of Sojourner Truth’s America (University of Illinois Press; March 11, 2009). She talked Sojourner Truth’s struggles to hold her own in nineteenth-century America. Linda and David Beito are the authors of Black Maverick: T.R.M. Howard’s Fight for Civil Rights and Economic Power (University of Illinois Press; April 8, 2009). They talked about why Theodore Roosevelt Mason Howard (1908-76), a civil rights leader, entrepreneur, and surgeon, had been overlooked by historians of the movement.

This 3 p.m. ET program from the Chicago Tribune Printers Row Lit Fest was held on the Books and Media Stage in the Lake Room of University Center. close
