German ambassador to the United States Peter Ammon spoke at the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum to commemorate the 75th anniversary of Kristallnacht. Following his speech, three holocaust survivors recounted their memories of “Kristallnacht,” when pro-Nazi mobs and soldiers ransacked Jewish homes and synagogues.

On November 9th and 10th, 1938, Nazi “Brown Shirts” and mobs of non-Jewish citizens attacked Jewish-owned stores, ransacked Jewish homes, and burned down synagogues across Germany and Austria. This event, known as “Kristallnacht,” or the “Night of Broken Glass,” was one of the earliest examples of the widespread anti-Semitic violence that would come to define the Holocaust. close
