Gary Marcus talked about his book, Kluge: The Haphazard Construction of the Human Mind (Houghton Mifflin). He supplemented his talk with a slide presentation of his findings, and he responded to audience members' questions.

In the book Mr. Marcus argues that the human brain is a kluge (klooj), a functional but not carefully constructed device. Mr. Marcus explores memory, decision making, language, belief, and happiness and presents what he contends are the short comings of the brain. His examples range from why people vote against their own interests to how the usage of language or “framing” of words can change popular opinion (inheritance tax versus death tax).

Gary Marcus is a psychology professor at NYU and the director of the NYU Infant Language Learning Center. He is the author of The Birth of the Mind: How a Tiny Number of Genes Creates the Complexity of Human Life and editor of The Norton Psychology Reader. close
