Former Governor of Louisiana Kathleen Blanco talked about her time in public office and the challenges she faced when Hurricane Katrina made landfall. The former governor talked about the how her administration operated during the crisis and offered advice to other communities when facing large natural disasters in the future including preparedness and communications. Topics included the renewed spirit of public service in the rebuilding efforts. She responded to questions from members of the audience.

Former Governor Blanco was the first woman ever elected to the Louisiana state legislature or to seve on the Public Service Commission, where she became the first woman to chair the commission. She was elected lieutenant governor in 1995, and was overwhelmingly re-elected to her second term in 1999. In 2004 she became the first woman governor of Louisiana. After Hurrican Katrina, she did not run for re-election. close
