John F. Burns talked his life as a foreign and war correspondent, military efforts in Iraq and Afghanistan, politics of the United Kingdom, and the impact of planned cuts in Great Britain’s defense budget.

Mr. Burns is a longtime foreign correspondent for the New York Times and currently the paper’s London bureau chief. He is the winner of two Pulitzer prizes (1993 and 1997); his international postings have included Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, Beijing, Moscow, South Africa and others. In 1986, as China bureau chief, he was jailed on charges of spying. The charges were later dropped. Mr. Burns began at the Times in 1975 as a writer in the Metropolitan section. Prior to that he worked for the Toronto Globe and Mail. In addition to the Pulitzer prizes, he has twice won the George Polk Award for foreign reporting (1978 and 1996). close
