Mr. Rashid discussed his book, Jihad: The Rise of Militant Islam in Central Asia, published by Yale University Press. He argued that a proven commitment to political reform should be linked to all economic and military aid to Central Asian countries where militant Islamic groups wield power. He also said that to gain credibility in the region the U.S. needs to make a long-term commitment to build up Afghanistan and suggested that the U.S. should start depending on political rather than military strategies. He talked about the situation in Pakistan and the effort to hunt down members of al-Qaida. Mr. Rashid answered questions following his remarks. close
