In her book she recounts the history of the Carlisle Indian Industrial School, a boarding school for Native Americans founded by abolitionist Lieutenant Colonel Richard Henry Pratt in 1879. The school based in Carlisle, Pennsylvania became noted for its football team, whose squads transformed the game by introducing the forward pass and several trick plays under the tutelage of their coach Glenn “Pop” Warner and led by five-position all-star Jim Thorpe. Ms. Jenkins explained Carlisle’s unlikely victories against preeminent Ivy League powerhouses and talked about the contradictions of the school and its founder.
