Jabari Asim talked about his book The N Word: Who Can Say It, Who Shouldn’t, and Why, published by Houghton Mifflin. In his book Mr. Asim describes the historical underpinnings of the racial epithet. From its first usage to its current proclivity and redefinition in current popular culture, Mr. Asim contends that the word should not be used in casual conversation as its true meaning is meant to demean and degrade. Instead, Mr. Asim argues that the word can be engaged by a select group of artists and public individuals whose intentions are to twist the word for progress in black identity and culture. The guest interviewer was Bikari Kitwana.

Jabari Asim is the deputy editor of the Washington Post Book World. He also writes a syndicated, weekly column on popular culture.

Bakari Kitwana is the author of three books about hip-hop. A former executive editor for The Source magazine, he is also the co-founder of the National Hip-Hop Political Convention. close
