Veterans and military historians talked to reporters about the course of World War II in the Pacific, including the early defeats, the island invasions across the Pacific, the proposed invasion of Japan and the dropping of the atomic bomb. They also talked about how President Clinton would commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the end of the war in several ceremonies in Hawaii in early September.
