Colonel Dave Severance was the commander of E Company, 28th Marines which took Mt. Suribachi and raised the flags on Iwo Jima. Donald Mates and James White were veterans of the Fourth Platoon of the Third Marine Division which landed on Iwo Jima on February 24, 1945. They talked about hand-to-hand fighting and the death of platoon mate Jimmy Trimble a few days later.
