C-SPAN previewed the Israeli parliamentary and prime minister elections. Guests and viewers discussed the historical background of the election and the main issues involved, especially the peace process between Israel’s Arab neighbors and Palestinians. They also discussed the unique aspects of this election, which was the first one in which citizens would directly elect the prime minister. The two major candidates were Shimon Peres from the Labour Party who succeeded the assassinated Yitzhak Rabin and Benjamin Netanyahu from the Likud Party. Several clips from campaign events in Israel were also shown. close
