A presentation by Peter Reddaway, Professor of Political Science at George Washington University, of then President Gorbachev’s hold on power in the Soviet Union. He described the various factions within Soviet politics that were confronting Perestroika and Gorbachev’s rule. Reddaway considers him safe for the time being, but may be out in 2-3 years time. Details were presented as to how Gorbachev could remain in power from broadening his political base and using tactics similar to Khrushchev in the late 50's. Concerns were raised about the Soviet Union’s possible withdraw from Eastern Europe would be a landmine for Perestroika and whether Russian Troops would fire on their own people. during riots. close
