Some of the key players involved in the process of the National Telecommunications and Information Administration’s (NTIA) ceding of authority over the domain name system talked about their concerns in the future of Internet governance. In March 2014, NTIA asked the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to develop a proposal to transition its stewardship role to a global body. Some of the issues they considered included potential undue influence or control by governments, Internet governance by a majority vote rather than consensus, and treaties that could nullify previous ICANN commitments. close
