Following a subcommittee meeting in which members agreed to forward charges of nine counts of misconduct to the full committee, Representative Traficant and Representative Hefley spoke to reporters about the misconduct hearings. The hearings were conducted to determine an appropriate punishment for Representative Traficant on charges related to his conviction for corruption and racketeering.
