Former Representative Perriello moderated a discussion of the over $60 billion federal assistance given to U.S. auto industry in 2009. Steven Rattner talked about his role as the Obama administration “car czar” in the restructuring of Detroit’s automobile companies. He argued that the “auto bailout” prevented the collapse of General Motors and Chrysler Group and their supply chain, saving over 1 million U.S. jobs. Topics of discussion included whether there were alternatives to government involvement. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience.
