Secretary Spellings and Congressman Cole spoke before hundreds of Indian tribal and community leaders at the National Congress of American Indians (NCAI) 62nd Annual Conference. Representative Cole, the only Native American in Congress, expressed support for tribal sovereignty and Indian gaming. Secretary Spellings discussed gains by American Indians in math and reading scores. She also spoke about the need to extend the No Child Left Behind Act to extend to high schools in order to reduce disparities in achievement levels. Following her prepared remarks, Secretary Spellings responded to questions and comments from Native American leaders. Tex Hall, the outgoing president of the NCAI, moderated the event. close
