Before voting on their final report, committee members heard testimony from members of the Advisory Commission on the Consumer Price Index about proposed changes to the index. The commission found that the CPI, as calculated by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, overstates the true increase in the nation’s cost of living by 1.1 percentage point per year. The changes recommended by commission members would result in Social Security benefits cuts. The index is used in many government programs as an index for cost of living allowances. Professor Boskin was chairman of the bipartisan commission.
