A town hall meeting commemorated the 50th anniversary of the desegregation sit-in at a Woolworth lunch counter in Greensboro, N.C. On February 1, 1960, four black college students asked for service at the “whites only” lunch counter. When asked to leave they stayed in their seats. This sit-in ignited student involvement in the civil rights movement. The three living members of the Greensboro Four participated in a town hall meeting with middle school and high school students from the District of Columbia area. Mr. Wilson moderated.
A video clip was shown from the documentary film by Video Dialogue, February One. Excerpts, hosted by Xavier Carnegie, were presented from the museum’s Historic Theatre programs Sing for Freedom and Join the Student Sit Ins.
This “Youth Town Hall with the Greensboro Civil Rights Pioneers: Commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the Woolworth Lunch Counter Student Sit-In” was held at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, February 4, 2010, in the National Museum of American History’s Carmichael Auditorium.
