Ranking member Rep. Waxman chastised Rep. Burton, the committee chairman, for language he used against President Clinton yesterday, saying, “I found your remarks to be both vile and repugnant.” Other Democrats called Rep. Burton’s investigation of 1996 campaign fund-raising “arbitrary, coercive and abusive.” The request to grant immunity to four persons failed to get the required two-thirds majority vote needed. The committee then considered four resolutions directing the House general counsel to immunize testimony by individuals and to release materials. Rep. Burton also displayed a “stone wall” with pictures of witnesses and targets of his investigation of those he believes have not cooperated. President Clinton was among the pictured.
