Deputy Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and Justin Siberell, with the State Department’s Bureau of Counterterrorism, testified at a hearing on the threat posed by ISIL* to the United States. They discussed the strengthening of the visa waiver program and increased information sharing between international partners. Deputy Secretary Mayorkas said it was critical to stop radicalization in the U.S. by preventing young people from falling prey to ISIL’s online propaganda. The State Department and USAID recently launched a joint strategy to combat radicalization and stop recruitment into terrorist groups. Topics included issues with the Transportation Security Administration’s security program.
