Participants paid tribute to all veterans of World War II, especially

the almost one million who were killed or wounded. Congress

authorized this memorial in 1993 and it is located between the

Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument. President Clinton

honored World War II veterans and those who helped win the war while

staying at home. He also praised the World War II generation for its

post-war accomplishments, including racial and gender equality. President Clinton and Roger Durbin unveiled the plaque that will mark the future site of the memorial. The site was consecrated with soil collected from 16 American cemeteries overseas where U.S. World War II service members are buried.
