President Clinton joined both elected officials and American leaders in the Catholic Church to welcome Pope John Paul II for his fourth visit to the United States. The president thanked the Pope for the inspiration he gives to Catholics in America; such inspiration has translated into many good works that have the country better. He also thanked the Pope for leading by expample with unshakeable values and his “message of faith, family, community, and peace.” Pope John Paul II was looking forward to celebrating the 50th anniversary of the United Nations; he was scheduled to speak there the following day. He also expressed his hope that “America will preserve its own best traditions and openness to opportunity.”
