Panelists talked about the future and security implications of the Real ID Act, as well as the challenges facing states as as result of the act. The 2005 Real ID Act established standards for driver’s licenses and other documents, based on recommendations from the 9/11 Commission. Ms. Rectanus said “key vulnerabilities remain” in the government’s effort to put uniform standards in place for state-issued identification cards. Ms. Cohan talked about the experience of Delaware, one of the first of the only 13 states fully compliant with the law. The panelists responded to questions from members of the audience, including Janice Kephart.
