President Obama participated in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns and then spoke during a Memorial Day observance program at Arlington National Cemetery. In his remarks he praised the sacrifice of military personnel who had given their lives in several wars and recognized the sacrifice of the families gathered to remember more recent victims of conflict in Iraq and Afghanistan.
