In the first case brought to trial by the Iraq Special Tribunal, eight defendants were brought before the tribunal for their parts in crimes involving the killing of 143 people in Dujail, a town 60 kilometers north of Baghdad, where in 1982 Saddam Hussein’s motorcade was ambushed in an apparent assassination attempt. Saddam Hussein and the other defendants are accused of crimes against humanity carried out in retaliation for the assassination attempt.

Defendants were escorted to the courtroom by armed Iraqi security personnel and seated in locked docks during the proceedings. The eight defendants were Saddam Hussein, Barzan Ebraheem, Taha Yasin Ramadhan, Awad Hamed Al-Bander, Abd Allah Kadhem Ruaid, Ali Daeem Ali, Mohammed Azawi Ali, and Mizher Abdulah Rawed.

At the end of the day’s proceedings, the judge adjourned the trial until November 28, 2005.
