Following the conferring of honorary degrees, Mr. Hooks congratulated the 1992 graduates and discussed the acquittal of four white Los Angeles police officers charged with beating a black suspect, Rodney King, in an arrest captured on videotape by a Los Angeles resident. Mr. Hooks called the acquittal “stupid, incomprehensible, unfair and unjust,” and called for an end to economic and social violence.
