The executive director of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), Benjamin Hooks, delivered the commencement address at Howard University in Washington, DC. Following the conferring of honorary degrees, Mr. Hooks congratulated the 1992 graduates and discussed the acquittal of four white Los Angeles police officers charged with beating a black suspect, Rodney King, in an arrest captured on videotape by a Los Angeles resident. Mr. Hooks called the acquittal “stupid, incomprehensible, unfair and unjust,” and called for an end to economic and social violence. close
