Congressmen debated the benefits of a single-payer health care system under special order in the House. Representatives Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and Jim McDermott (D-WA) supported the idea of a Canadian-style single-payer system. Representatives Dennis Hastert(R-IL) and Craig Thomas (R-WY) opposed such a system and called it socialistic. The debate was co-sponsored by the Conservative Opportunity Society and the Progressive Caucus. This was the first in a series of Lincoln-Douglas style debates scheduled to take place during the coming months and designed to give national issues the debate and discussion members say they “do not often receive” during House sessions. close
