Henry Hotze, Confederate Propagandist

Lonnie Burnett, editor of the book Henry Hotze, Confederate Propagandist, talked about the writings of Mr. Hotze, who was a journalist and editor that lived in Mobile, Alabama, for nearly a decade. From 1855 to 1865, Mr. Hotze was an associate editor at John Forsyth’s Mobile Register, served in the Confederate Army and as a Confederate diplomat, and edited a London-based newspaper, The Index, that promoted the Confederate cause. His writings promoted a scientific hierarchy of race-based intelligence that was used by white supremacists as a justification for slavery. Professor Burnett was interviewed at the History Museum of Mobile.

C-SPAN’s Local Content Vehicles (LCVs) made a stop in their “2014 LCV Cities Tour” in Mobile, Alabama, from April 19-23 to feature the history and literary life of the community. Working with the Comcast Cable local affiliate, they visited literary and historic sites where local historians, authors, and civic leaders were interviewed. close
