In his opening statement Senator Grassley complained that Clinton administration officials had refused to testify because protocol had not been followed by letting citizens testify first. Relatives who had lost family members in nursing homes then testified that they were outraged when officials did not adequately look into their complaints about substandard care. They were followed by a panel who testified about abusive treatment in nursing homes and that state and federal officials often ignored complaints or did not adequately fix problems in nursing homes. close
