The American Society of Newspaper Editors held a forum during their annual meeting on the employment of minorities in the news media. A 1990 survey conducted by the society, discussed by Mr. Greenmoon, found minorities to make up 8.7 percent of the employees in the nation’s news rooms, up one percent in the past year. However, minorities make up 21 percent of the nation’s work force and 25 percent of the American population. Panel members discussed the reasons for the wide gap between the percentage of minorities hired by American news rooms and the percentage of minorities in the work force, and attempted to determine an agenda to increase the number of minority hirings. Ms. Simpson discussed her fifteen years of work in increasing the number of minorities and women in the nation’s news rooms, including her publicized conflict with an editor of the New York Times concerning woman and minority reporters in the New York Times news room. close
